We are all governed by our limits which are set by our
goals.
Take two different students, for example.
The first one tries to get A+ on the exam. And the second
student, B+.
The funny thing is as soon as they set the target, the mindset
for how much effort they will put on the exam are automatically determined too.
In other words, once they intend what grade they will achieve,
they automatically put themselves at the different paths. Even in terms of “thought”
they are no longer on the same level now.
Whether intended or not, they are governed by the thoughts of
their target score plan and they are meant to be thinking according to those
thoughts.
The one who decided to score A+ is more likely to take extra
effort on studying when he or she is given extra time. That student knows how far
he is away from the goal and will push oneself toward that goal.
The other one with lower grade in mind, because of the limitation
of the goal, is not able to go beyond it and put extra effort. (well, in this
case, we all know “extra” is just a relatively defined term since we know this guy’s
target isn’t as high as the other one’s)
And we know it’s not really likely this one is capable of
thinking of doing work further in a meaningful amount.
So our conclusion is, we should set a goal.
And what we should remind ourselves is: goal is another word
for limitation.
